Future Hanoi

Hanoi is the political and cultural centre of Vietnam, famous for its ancient city quarter. The capital city of Vietnam is over 1000 years old, making it the oldest capital city in Southeast Asia. It’s also a city of over 8 million people – the second largest city in Vietnam – and it’s growing faster than predicted,.

Here is a look at some of the big projects that will house and move the people of Hanoi.

Starlake (also known as Tay Ho Tay New Town) is a new urban area covering 186.3 ha within three districts to the west of West Lake (Tay Ho Tay means West Lake West).

Within the Tay Ho Tay area will be the new national administration area. The ministries and agencies that will move their headquarters here inclide the Ministries of Planning and Investment, Industry and Trade, Justice, Construction, Transport, Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs, Health, Agriculture and Rural Development, Culture – Sports and Tourism, Information and Communication, Education and Training, and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.

Location: Khu đô thị Ciputra, phường Xuân Đỉnh, Bắc Từ Liêm, Hà Nội.

VietinBank Business Center by Foster + Partners features two towers that will be used for office, hotel, and retail space. The tallest tower (68-storeys/365m) will be the headquarters for VietinBank, while the second tower (48-storeys) will house a five-star hotel and serviced apartments. The towers are connected by a seven-storey podium building that will include shops and restaurants, and a rooftop garden.

North Hanoi Smart City

Phuong Trach Tower

Location: Nhat Tan-Noi Bai Highway, Dong Anh and Soc Son Districts, Ha Noi.
Developers: BRG Group and Sumitomo Corporation.

The North Hanoi Smart City is a new urban area on the Nhat Tan-Noi Bai route (Vo Nguyen Giap Road) stretching 11 kilometres from Nhat Tan Bridge to Noi Bai International Airport. The project covers the districts of Dong Anh and Soc Son.

The proposed signature building is the Phuong Trach Tower, which would be a supertall tower at 108-storeys/600 metres in height.

“Japan’s government and more than 20 companies are teaming up to construct a smart town in Vietnam by 2023, featuring self-driving buses and a host of energy-saving technology.

General trader Sumitomo Corp., machinery maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and subway operator Tokyo Metro are among the businesses on board. Valued at nearly 4 trillion yen ($37.3 billion), this stands to be the largest Japan-led overseas project to date, according to officials of the Japanese companies involved.”

Tay Ho View is a complex of 9 buildings including 5-star hotels, high-end serviced apartments, a convention centre, restaurants and commercial space. Tay Ho View is located in the Quang An ward of Tay Ho district, an area that has become popular with the expat community.

The previous design of the project included two taller towers, and it was called Sun Grand City Lotus Harbour.

The Tay Ho View and floating opera house projects are on the Quang An Peninsula on the east side of Tay Ho Lake. There are plans to redevelop the land in the peninsula, which would require wholesale property acquisition and land clearance.

Postef Building

Postef Building - 61 Tran Phu

Location: 61 Tran Phu, Ba Dinh District, Ha Noi.
Developer: Post and Telecommunications Equipment Joint Stock Company (POSTEF).
Architect: alinco.

The Postef Building is a proposed office building on the site of the colonial-era post equipment factory. Work begun on the demolition of the factory, and then the government ordered to cease dismantling the ancient building.

Landmark 72 (AON Hanoi Landmark Tower, and previously Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower) is a complex featuring the landmark tower of 72-storys (350m) and two 48-story twin towers. The building opened in 2011, and it was the tallest building in Vietnam until 2018 (succeeded by Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City). Landmark 72 remains the tallest building in Hanoi.

Lotte Center Hanoi is a 272m skyscraper of 62 floors, and it comprises office space, a 5 star hotel, and serviced residences, and the podium includes the Lotte Department Store. The tower was ompleted in September 2014, becoming the second-tallect building in Hanoi.

“Winner of the Asia Pacific International Property Awards 2019, this LEED Silver-Certified building is the first completed Gensler-designed headquarters office building in Vietnam. The unique design’s optimized oval geometry connects employees via interconnected floor spaces across all levels.”

Tran Hung Dao bridge will be 900m long with a total length of about 5.5km. The bridge starts at the Trần Hưng Đạo-Trần Thánh Tông intersection in Hoàn Kiếm District and extends to Nguyễn Văn Linh Road in Long Biên District.

Railways

Vietnam is planning tp upgrade the old North-South railway to an express railway. The terminal station for Hanoi will be moved to Ngoc Hoi Station to the south of the city.

There is also a proposal to upgrade the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway.

Metro

Hanoi is building a metro transit system that will eventually include 8 lines. The first metro line opened in November 2021.

Airports

Noi Bai International Airport
