Kuala Lumpur isn’t the biggest capital city in Southeast Asia, and it’s not even in the top 10 biggest cities. Yet it tops the list for most buildings over 100 metres. And out of five buildings over 400 metres in the region, four of them are in KL. Not only has it got density, but in my opinion, it has the most interesting skyline.
KL now has even more projects underway that will place the city among the world’s best skylines. Here are some of the major developments.

Merdeka 118

Status: Under Construction.
The Merdeka 118 development features the PNB 118, a 118-storey, 644-metre megatall skyscraper. The project is next to the historical Merdeka Stadium and Stadium Negara, and the Merdeka MRT station on the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line opened in 2017.
Tun Razak Exchange
Address: Bounded by Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Barat, Jalan Utara, Kuala Lumpur.
Official Website: trx.my
News: skyscrapercity.com
Status: Under Construction.
Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) is a 70-acre development in central KL that is being built to become the financial district of the city. The project is scheduled to be built over 15 years, with The Exchange 106 tower being the landmark building of the site. The TRX MRT station is now operating, with another line to junction there in the future. The site will also include hotels, residential and retail space, as well as parks and cultural facilities.
Bukit Bintang City Centre
Address: Corner Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.
Official Website: bbcckl.com
Status: Under Construction.
Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) is located on a 19.4-acre lot within the Golden Triangle at the old Pudu prison site. The project features several towers in what will be a city within the city. BBCC includes residential apartments, a hotel, office space, and retail. There is also a signature tower which will be over 400 metres tall.

Bukit Bintang Plaza
Address: Corner Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.
Developer Website: tradewindscorp.com
Status: Site Clearance.
News Updates: skyscrapercity.com
Not to overuse the phrase “prime real estate” too often, but Bukit Bintang Plaza is as prime as it gets. BB Plaza is on Bukit Bintang next to the Bukit Bintang metro and monorail stations. It will feature luxury condominiums anchored with the podium being a lifestyle mall.
Tradewinds Square
Address: Corner Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Perak, Kuala Lumpur.
Official Website: tradewindscorp.com
News: skyscrapercity.com
Status: Stalled.
Tradewinds Square features a tower that will be 775-metres tall with 150 floors, making the nearby Petronas Twin Towers look small in comparison. The project was announced in 2011 and it’s located on the site of the former Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel and Kompleks Antarabangsa, near the Raja Chulan monorail station.
While the demolition of the old buildings went ahead, the site remains empty. With so many other towers going up around KL, it’s possible that the final version will not be as high.
8 Conlay
Address: 8 Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur.
Official Website: 8conlay.com
News: skyscrapercity.com
Status: Under construction.
8 Conlay is a development featuring 3 towers on a retail podium. The 68-storey tower will be home to Kempinsky Hotel and Hotel Residences, and the two residential towers will be YOO8 serviced by Kempinski.
Kuala Lumpur already has the world’s tallest twin towers, and when this project finishes it will also have the world’s tallest spiralled twin residential towers. The conjoined towers are kind of like a bigger version of Dancing House in Prague.
Conlay Station

Address: Jalan Conlay, Kuala Lumpur.
Status: Under construction.
This development is the site of the future MRT Line 2 Conlay Station. With a blank slate to work with, the station is being built in conjunction with a mall and three office blocks. This is on the Sungai Buloh–Serdang–Putrajaya line, and with this new station there are numerous new developments nearby that are planned or under construction.
Plaza Rakyat

Address: Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur.
Status: Stalled.
News: skyscrapercity.com.
Plaza Rakyat (The People’s Plaza) is a mixed-use development that began construction during the 1990s and stalled when the 1997 Asian financial crisis hit. Over 20 years later it remains a blighted abandoned site. There have been regular announcements of an impending revival, but I won’t believe it until construction machinery is on-site again.
Bandar Malaysia
Address: Sungai Besi Airport site, Kuala Lumpur.
Status: Pre planning.
News: skyscrapercity.com.
Bandar Malaysia is transit-oriented development at the former Sungai Besi Airport (Sempang Air Force Base). This was the airport of Kuala Lumpur from 1952 to 1965, and with such a big parcel of land so close to the city centre, it has the potential to become a new transport and business hub.
The site will be the terminus for the Singapore – Kuala Lumpur high-speed railway and is being developed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). With the train being postponed and 1MDB being under investigation the project has been delayed.

News: skyscrapercity.com.
M101 Skywheel is 317-metre high building topped with an observation wheel flanked by two smaller towers. The building will include residential apartments, a hotel, retail, and that observation wheel. It’s an unusual design to say the least. Perhaps there was no other place in the city where a ground-level observation wheel would work. This is part of the Kampong Bharu City Centre Complex.
