Ben Thanh – Can Gio Railway (Ho Chi Minh City)

The Ben Thanh – Can Gio Railway (also referred to as a metro) is a proposed urban railway from Ben Thanh Market to the Can Gio coastal urban zone in Ho Chi Minh City. The railway has been proposed by Vingroup and is not part of the HCMC urban railway masterplan.

The line was first proposed in January 2025 to travel from Tan Thuan on Nguyen Van Linh Street (in former District 7) to Can Gio. The line would be 48.7 km with a top speed of 250kph. The line is being built primarily to serve the Can Gio new urban area that is being built by Vingroup.

In May 2025, Vingroup formed Vinspeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development Joint Stock Company as part of its bid to develop the North-South High-Speed Railway. In July 2025, Vinspeed announced that the Can Gio Railway would have a top speed of 350 kmh. This would make it the fastest metro line in the world, and the shortest high-speed railway in the world (of not counting the Shanghai maglev train).

In October 2025, Vingroup announced that the line would start from Ben Thanh Market in central HCMC. The new route will be built underground from from Ben Thanh to Tan Thuan, and elevated on the original alignment from Tan Thuan to Can Gio. The new route has a length of nearly 53 km.

Ben Thanh Station has been built to include Line 1/3A, Line 2, and Line 4. There is no provision for other lines, so the Can Gio line is proposed to be built next to 23/9 Park.

Groundbreaking for the Ben Thanh – Can Gio metro line project has been set for the 19th of December 2025.

Here are my thoughts on this proposed high-speed metro in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City proposes shifting metro start point to protect heritage sites – [20/11/25]
“To protect key cultural heritage sites, investors have revised the route of the high-speed Ben Thanh–Can Gio metro line, proposing to shift its starting point from Ben Thanh Market to 23/9 Park.”

“The new route would run along the park area parallel to Le Lai Street, then turn onto Ky Con Street and cross the Ben Nghe Canal. After crossing the canal, the line would veer northeast along Hoang Dieu Street, then follow the corridor along Doan Nhu Hai Street, pass the Nha Rong Port area, and reach the Tan Thuan 2 Bridge.

From there, the line would head southeast onto Nguyen Van Linh Street, pass through the Nguyen Thi Thap intersection into Tan My Ward, and maintain the current alignment until reaching the depot.”

“The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has proposed prompt approval of the project principle to accelerate progress, while the detailed alignment will be assessed during the feasibility study phase.”

“At a recent meeting of the Steering Committee for the Development of Ho Chi Minh City’s Urban Railway Network, Secretary of the City Party Committee and Head of the Steering Committee, Mr. Tran Luu Quang, announced that the city would break ground on the southern city’s Ben Thanh – Can Gio line on December 19.”

High-speed rail from downtown HCMC to outlying Can Gio to break ground in Nov – [23/08/25]
“According to VinSpeed’s study, the 48.5-kilometer high-speed rail line will cut travel time to just 16 minutes. Between 2030 and 2050, trains are expected to run every 12 minutes.

The line will have two stations – Tan Thuan at the starting point, located on the median of Nguyen Van Linh Street, and Can Gio at the terminus, on a 39-hectare site adjacent to the Can Gio sea encroachment tourism-urban area.

High-speed rail connecting downtown Ho Chi Minh City, Can Gio set to begin construction by late 2025 – [22/08/25]
