April 1, 2024 By James Clark Leave a Comment

Eastern Visayas Railway

The Eastern Visayas Metro Rail System is a proposed railway in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. The railway would connect the islands of Samar and Leyte.

The Eastern Visayas railway was first proposed in 1999. The plan was revived in 2023 with the announcement of a task force to investigate the feasibility of the project.

The Eastern Visayas consists of three main islands: Samar, Leyte, and Biliran. No route has been officially proposed, apart from it connecting the two main islands. Samar and Leyte are currently connected by the San Juanico Bridge (2,164 m).

The largest cities on each island are Calbayog City (Samar) and Tacloban City (Leyte). The current distance between these cities is 171.9 km via Maharlika Hwy/Pan-Philippine Hwy/Route 1/AH26 (4 hr 21 min according to Google Maps).
