The Thu Thiem – Long Thanh Light Rail is a proposed railway connecting Ho Chi Minh City to the under-construction second airport of Ho Chi Minh City.
The line begins at the proposed new central railway station in the Thu Thiem new urban area in Thu Duc City. The 38km standard-gauge railway goes to Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province. There are 19 elevated planned and 1 or 2 stops planned for the airport. The line will pass through the airport to the depot on the other side of the airport. It is estimated that the railway will cost 1.7 billion USD.
This is a separate project to the proposed Hanoi-HCMC high-speed railway, which also goes from Thu Thiem to Long Thanh International Airport. The light rail will run via a different route to the high-speed railway.
The Thu Thiem Station site is located about 7km from Ben Thanh Market in District 1. Line 2 of the HCMC Metro is planned to be extended from Ben Thanh Station to Thu Thiem, but this is the second stage and the first stage hasn’t begun construction yet. Passengers arriving at Thu Thiem have to make their own way to District 1.
The Thu Thiem – Long Thanh Light Rail will possibly interchange with the proposed Bien Hoa – Vung Tau Railway.
