Surabaya is the capital city of East Java Province and the second-largest city in Indonesia. There have been some proposals for a transit system for the city, which has been referred to as an MRT. Proposed systems include lightrail, tram, and monorail. This article will use the catch-all urban rail transit in reference to systems that are proposed for Surabaya.
Surabaya has a regional commuter railway, and there was an electric tram system until 1978. A tram and monorail system was announced in 2013, and an LRT was announced in 2018.

Eri Cahyadi: ART Development in Surabaya is more rational than MRT – [10/06/24]
“Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahyadi stated that the construction of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) is more rational to build in the area than theass Rapid Transit (MRT) or the Light Rail Transit (LRT), because it is in accordance with the availability of the regional budget (APBD).”

Surabaya to start construction of new tram network by year’s end – [28/02/18]
“Surabaya is set to break ground on a new tram network towards the end of this year, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said in the East Java capital on Tuesday (28/02).
The 17-kilometer tram route, which will have 29 stations between Rajawali and Joyoboyo, will provide a transportation alternative for the region’s 3.4 million residents.”

Surabaya gearing up for Rp 8.6 trillion MRT project – [20/12/13]
“The matter was disclosed by Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini recently in Surabaya, after greeting investors who have expressed interest in the project, in a forum called ‘Market Sounding of Surabaya Monorail and Tram Investment Project.'”
“The monorail network will connect East Surabaya and West Surabaya at a distance of around 20 kilometers, while the tram line will link South Surabaya and North Surabaya at a distance of 16 km.”

“The regional government of Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city after the capital city of Jakarta, is planning to tender two separate infrastructure projects – open to both foreign and domestic investors – at the start of December 2013. The two projects involve the construction of the city’s monorail, valued at IDR 6.42 trillion (USD $558.3 million), and the construction of a tramline, valued at IDR 2.41 trillion (USD $209.6 million). When finished, the two projects are expected to reduce traffic congestion in Surabaya, East Java’s economic center.”
