Hat Yai – Songkhla Railway

October 21, 2024 By James Clark 2 Comments

Hat Yai-Songkhla Railway

The Hat Yai – Songkhla Railway is a proposal to revive the old Hat Yai to Songkhla railway line in Southern Thailand.

The distance between Hat Yai and Songkhla is about 29 km. Songkhla is the capital of Songkhla Province, though Hat Yai is the biggest city.

The original line opened in 1917 and operated until 1978. Most of the track has been encroached on now, though the old Songkhla station remains.

The revival of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Railway was proposed as part of the Surat Thani – Hat Yai – Songkhla double-tracking. The single-track metre-gauge line from Surat Thani to Hat Yai is being double-tracked, and a new line from Hat Yai to Songkhla was proposed as part of this project. The Hat Yai – Songkhla section is not currently not under construction.

can not believe what I am seeing. The images for the new station at Songkla are ridiculous. All this lines needs is a basic shuttle service and no grand buildings. This is all that is wrong with the Thai railways massive infrastructure expenditure but without any consideration to providing a regular service between centers like most of the rest of the world

Yes, I think the SRT hates money, that’s my only explanation. They should be looking at Songkhla at part of a Hat Yai-Songkhla urban railway. They are planning a monorail for Hat Yai. Why not make a commuter line to Songkhla and develop some area in its path.
