The MRTA board approved a budget of over 58.7 million baht for fiscal year 2027 to construct a skywalk connecting Hua Mak station (Yellow Line and Airport Link), along with a pedestrian walkway connecting Lak Si station (Pink Line and Red Line). The proposal will be submitted to the new Cabinet for consideration. Construction is expected to take one year, aiming to improve convenience and safety. The board also instructed discussions with the Ministry of Transport to negotiate with the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) for exemptions from land rental and construction supervision fees.

The “Transportation Innovation Team” of Daily News (Thailand) reported that the board meeting of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) approved a resolution for the MRTA to request budget allocation for fiscal year 2027 to fund the construction of a connecting walkway at the interchange station between the Yellow Line (Lat Phrao–Samrong section) and the Pink Line (Khae Rai–Min Buri section).

The total budget amounts to 58.74 million baht, aimed at enhancing convenience and safety for public travel. This follows a decision in late 2024, when the Traffic Policy Committee of Thailand assigned the MRTA to carry out the project.

The reason for the delay in proceeding with this matter is due to legal constraints. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is unable to use its own revenue to carry out the project because the land used for constructing the Yellow Line connecting walkway belongs to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), while the Red Line area is under the responsibility of the Department of Highways (Thailand) (DOH). These areas are not under MRTA’s jurisdiction.

In addition, the construction work arose after the completion of the Yellow Line and Pink Line projects. Going forward, the MRTA will submit the matter to the Ministry of Transport (Thailand) and the new Cabinet of Thailand for consideration. If approved, construction will proceed, with an estimated construction period of about one year.

If the Cabinet of Thailand approves the proposal and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) receives the allocated budget, construction will be expedited.

However, the MRTA board has instructed the authority to consult with the Ministry of Transport (Thailand) to negotiate a waiver of land rental fees and construction supervision fees payable to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT). This is because the connecting walkway is a public facility jointly used to link the MRTA’s Yellow Line with the Airport Rail Link (Thailand) operated by the SRT.

In addition, the SRT will be responsible for the maintenance of the facility.

The report further states that the construction of the Yellow Line connecting walkway has a total budget of 49.25 million baht. This includes:

The construction of an elevated pedestrian bridge (skywalk) connecting the Yellow Line’s Hua Mak Station with the Hua Mak Station of the Airport Rail Link (Thailand). The skywalk will be 4.25 meters wide and 51 meters long, and will be equipped with facilities such as passenger elevators, stairways, lighting systems, and CCTV cameras.

The walkway will connect to Entrance/Exit 1 of the Yellow Line’s Hua Mak Station, crossing over the Eastern Railway Line, and link to the existing covered walkway of the Airport Rail Link’s Hua Mak Station.

The construction of a ground-level covered walkway connecting the Yellow Line’s Hua Mak Station with the Hua Mak Station on the Eastern long-distance railway line. The walkway will link to Entrance/Exit 4 of the Yellow Line’s Hua Mak Station, using the existing sidewalk width, which is approximately 1.6–1.8 meters, with a length of about 150 meters.

The construction will take place on land under the responsibility of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT).

As for the construction of the connecting walkway for the Pink Line, the total budget is 9.49 million baht. The project involves building a ground-level covered walkway connecting the Pink Line with the Red Line suburban electric railway at Lak Si Station.

The construction will take place on land under the responsibility of the Department of Highways (Thailand). The connecting walkway will be 2.50 meters wide, covered with a roof, and approximately 57 meters long. It will be equipped with facilities such as lighting systems, CCTV systems, and other related components.

Once completed, the project will enhance the efficiency of transfers between mass transit systems in the area, making travel more convenient and safer for the public.

Article By: dailynews.co.th

Thailand’s first Shinkansen high-speed rail line, “Bangkok-Chiang Mai,” is hoping the new government will approve its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to prevent it from expiring, despite being approved 9 years ago without construction. It plans to share its route with the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project.

The “Daily News Transport Innovation Team” reported that the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) has held discussions with the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the high-speed rail project on the Bangkok–Chiang Mai route, covering a distance of 668 km. The project is part of a memorandum of cooperation on rail system development between Thailand’s Ministry of Transport and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). The development is divided into two phases: Phase 1 from Bangkok to Phitsanulok, spanning 380 km, and Phase 2 from Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai, spanning 288 km.

This is because the EIA received approval from the National Environment Board (NEB) more than five years ago. The Bangkok–Phitsanulok section was approved on 8 August 2017, while the Phitsanulok–Chiang Mai section was approved on 2 August 2018. Normally, an EIA is valid for five years; once it expires, the mitigation measures must be reviewed and resubmitted to the NEB for consideration.

ONEP stated that the EIA has not expired because the project uses the same alignment on the section from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to Ayutthaya Station as the Thai–Chinese high-speed rail Phase 1 project (Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima), which is currently under construction. The projects share elevated structures, with four tracks in total—two for the northern line and two for the northeastern line. However, if construction begins, detailed discussions will be required regarding the signalling system, specifically whether two separate systems need to be installed.

Implementation of the project must await the policy direction of the new government after the election. Previously, when the Pheu Thai Party was in government, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit ordered the project to be put on hold in order to prioritize the Thai–Chinese high-speed rail project in both phases first, due to the government’s budget constraints. Meanwhile, Japan was not yet ready to jointly invest under Thailand’s proposal, but expressed willingness to support the project by providing Shinkansen system technology.

According to a study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in 2017, the project had an estimated investment value of approximately 276.226 billion baht. In 2021, the study was reviewed and the budget was reduced by 14.472 billion baht, bringing the total to 261.754 billion baht. The line would have 12 stations: Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, Don Mueang Station, Ayutthaya Station, Lopburi Station, Nakhon Sawan Station, Phichit Station, Phitsanulok Station, Sukhothai Station, Si Satchanalai Station, Lampang Station, Lamphun Station, and Chiang Mai Station.

The Bangkok – Chiang Mai High-Speed Railway (also known as the Northern High-speed Railway) is a proposed high-speed railway that would be built alongside the current Northern Line in Thailand.

Japan has proposed building the railway in partnership with Thailand, and the line would be a Shinkansen-like bullet train similar to that used in Japan.

The project was first proposed in 2011, and a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) was reached in 2015. Japan released its study of the project in 2017, estimating that it would cost up to 420 billion baht to build (approximately $12.9 billion USD). Thailand wanted Japan to be an invester in the railway, while Japan was only interested in providing loans for the project. At that impasse the project has not progressed since 2018, though it still remains on the table as of 2021.

The length of the railway would be 670 km with 12 stations. The top speed would be 300kph, and the trip would take about three and a half hours. For comparison, the current line is 755 km and the journey takes from 11 hours to 14 hours and 20 minutes. The new line shortens the length because it uses tunnels and viaducts, while the old line meanders along the flattest path. The new line also shortens the trip by 8 km by starting at the new Bang Sue Grand Station in Bangkok.

To reduce the cost of the project, Thailand has also suggested reducing the top speed to 180kph and 200kph (which is technically not a high-speed railway). Such a railway would be comparable to the China-Laos railway and InterCity railways in Europe, and it would still be an improvement on the current railway. A trip of four and half hours would be a competitive alternative to flying.

Another consideration is that the railway would be shared with the planned Chiang Rai Railway, branching off at Den Chai.

Whichever system is built, it would be on a standard gauge railway and separate to the current metre-gauge railway. This begins in the north at Watcharapol Station on the Pink Line, then south to connect with Lat Phrao 83 Station on the Yellow Line and and Ramkhamhaeng 12 Station on the Orange Line, crossing the Light Red Line (Bang Sue–Hua Mak) to Thong Lor Station on the BTS Sukhumvit Line.

The second section has been proposed to run from Phra Khanong to Rama III. Phra Khanong is two station away from Thong Lor on the BTS, so it’s not apparent if they mean to somehow build a monorail line adjacent to the BTS, of if they are building two separate lines and calling it one line. Previous plans show the monorail running down Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55), which would be the most logical way to continually run the line.

The final section would run from Rama III to Thaphra on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River.

In November 2021 the BMA announced that a feasibility study would be completed by March 2022.

Benjakitti Park is a public park in Khlong Toei District of Bangkok, Thailand. The park is on former land of the tobacco monopoly (the Tobacco Authority of Thailand). The factory was relocated and the land was converted into a park in 1992. Benjakitti Park was established in honour of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, to commemorate her 5th cycle (60th) birthday. The Queen Mother presided over its official opening on 5 December 2004.

Benjakitti Park is remarkable for its size and for the fact that this prime land near Sukhumvit Road wasn’t sold off to property developers.

In 2016 the rest of the tobacco factory grounds were repurposed to create an ecological forest park. The expanded area is a forest park that includes a wetland area. The park has a skybridge that allows visitors to walk around the park on an elevated walkway.

Another mall at Siam, the future “Shinjuku of Bangkok”, more classic hotels that have been lost, the South Sukhumvit Innovation District, and a mega project in Chinatown.

This is the annual Bangkok construction update, where I visit the most prominent construction projects around the city.

Bangkok is one of my most visited cities in Southeast Asia, so I am familiar with most of the big projects.

I was in Bangkok in December, which is the best time of year to visit. It’s the start of the dry season, and there are occasional cool mornings (referred to here as winter, and where you wonder if you should wear jeans in the morning). It’s also a good time of year for air quality.

I returned to Bangkok in January, and I arrived amid an airpocalypse. Schools were closed, and the government experimented with free train travel to try to get more cars off the road.

As a digital publisher/creator, I have been keeping a close watch on this to see if it’s a place I would like to live and work in. The website blurb says:

The Bangkok–Nong Khai high-speed railway is an under-construction railway that will connect Bangkok to Nong Khai in northeast Thailand on the Laos border. It will then be connected to the Laos-China Railway, providing a railway connection from Bangkok to Vientiane, and onwards to Kunming in China. This new railway is a double-track standard-gauge line that follows the same route as the current Northeastern line.

The project is also referred to as the China-Thailand Railway project, in reference to being built in partnership with Chinese companies (China Railway International and China Railway Design Corp).

The new railway was first proposed in 2010 alongside four other proposed high-speed railways from Bangkok. After years of delays due to terms of the arrangement with China and the 2014 coup, work officially began in 2017 before being delayed again. The project is expected to be completed by 2030.

Phase 1 of construction is for the 253km section between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, at a cost of Bt50.63-billion ($1.67 billion USD). Stations in this section include Bang Sue, Don Muang, Ayutthaya, Saraburi, Pak Chong, and Nakhon Ratchasima.

Phase 2 of the 354.5km section from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai is still in draft. The stations will include Nakhon Ratchasima, Bua Yai, Ban Phai, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai.

A new Mekong River railway bridge will be built on the Thailand-Laos border for the railway.

The total length will be 607.5 km long with an operating speed of 250 km/h. By comparison, the current Bangkok–Nong Khai railway is a length of 647.5 km and takes 9 hours and 25 minutes (an average speed of 68 km/h).

The new railway will be able to travel between Bangkok and Vientiane in under 3 hours, making it a competitive alternative to flying. Bangkokians will have the opportunity to take weekend trips to Luang Prabang by rail. It will turn Ayutthaya into a viable Bangkok commuter city, and it will put the Isaan cities of Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, and Udon Thani within a day trip to Bangkok.

The current Bangkok–Nong Khai railway is a single-track metre-gauge railway. It is currently being double-tracked, and the line will be retained for local and freight services. There will be new stations built for the high-speed line, and in Bangkok the railway will depart from Bang Sue Grand Station.

The Laos-China Railway was completed at the end of 2021, so by the time the Bangkok–Nong Khai project is finished, it will be ready to travel to Vientiane and the rest of Laos.

Because the Ministry of Transport has issued an order since 25 November 2024 for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to consider reviewing the study results and design new details to make the project current. Because it is a study result from 2008, the information is not current. Initially, the budget for 2027 will be requested to hire consultants to review the study results and design the details. When the project is ready and the study results show that it is worthwhile investing, it will be included in M-MAP 2.
