The Grey Line is a proposed monorail line in Bangkok by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The Grey Line would provide another north-south route connecting the northeast suburbs to central Bangkok.

The first section that has been proposed is the 19-kilometre segment from Watcharapol to Thong Lor. This begins in the north at Watcharapol Station on the Pink Line, then south to connect with Lat Phrao 83 Station on the Yellow Line and and Ramkhamhaeng 12 Station on the Orange Line, crossing the Light Red Line (Bang Sue–Hua Mak) to Thong Lor Station on the BTS Sukhumvit Line.

The second section has been proposed to run from Phra Khanong to Rama III. Phra Khanong is two station away from Thong Lor on the BTS, so it’s not apparent if they mean to somehow build a monorail line adjacent to the BTS, of if they are building two separate lines and calling it one line. Previous plans show the monorail running down Thonglo (Sukhumvit 55), which would be the most logical way to continually run the line.

The final section would run from Rama III to Thaphra on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River.

In November 2021 the BMA announced that a feasibility study would be completed by March 2022.

The monorail system was proposed by Chinese investors in 2017. The initial plan was to connect Iloilo International Airport to the City of Iloilo. In 2018 it was announced that there would be three lines:

Line 1: Iloilo City Hall to Ungka in Jaro district.
Line 2: Jaro to City.
Line 3: Mohon, Areval to City.

The monorail system was proposed by Chinese investors, with Chinese electric car maker BYD involved. BYD branched out into building monorails in China, called SkyRail.

The Iloilo Monorail would be integrated with the proposed Panay Railway, but at this point the city monorail and island railway have not been approved yet.

The project stalled since 2004, and the most recent news in 2023 said that there were no plans to revive the suspended monorail project.

Remnants of the unfinished monorail can be seen at Putrajaya Sentral.

Putrajaya Tram

A tram service connecting Putrajaya to Cyberjaya was proposed in 2016.

“An Automated Rapid Transit (ART) trackless tram is undergoing a trial run in Putrajaya until July 31.

If all goes well, the tram service is expected to kick off by year-end.”

“SPAD chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said the main reason in suggesting a tram system for Putrajaya and Bangi, which will also cover Cyberjaya and Kajang, is because it is relatively cost effective and eco friendly.”

“The Sepang Municipal Council will be testing a fully electric tram in Cyberjaya early next year under a pilot project as part of its aim of becoming a smart low-carbon city by 2025.

The tram uses the automated rapid transit (ART) system which is said to be a hybrid between a trackless train and electric bus”.

Thailand is a country of baby steps. With most things, change comes slowly, but it’s usually for the best, and this sentiment sums up Bangkok’s transit system perfectly.

When Bangkok’s first mass transit system opened in 1999 with 23 stations along 2 BTS lines (the light green Sukhumvit line and the dark green Silom line) the city’s population was ~6.5 million and its traffic jams were the stuff of legend. Long overdue, it was but the first step in a plan to pull the city kicking and screaming into the modern world of electrified mass transit.

Now hovering around 163 stations (thanks to new lines and extensions to existing lines) serving ~12 million people (and still fighting traffic jams), the plan is well underway, as several major new lines prepare to come online in the coming years.

The latest to be added to the brew is the new Yellow Line, a monorail system that serves the eastern suburbs of the city. It connects to the MRT blue line’s Lat Phrao station in the north, running east for 5 stations, south for a further 14 stations, and then west for the final 3 stations, connecting to the light green Sukhumvit BTS line at Samrong station.

I headed out to see how it measured up, riding it north to south on a Sunday afternoon.

The Good

As expected for a brand new line, the stations and trains are spotless. It was quite crowded when I was there with people of all ages, many of whom were taking photos of the trains, stations and general goings on, showing that there is a deep interest – if not outright pride – in the new line.

The ticketing system will be familiar to anyone who has taken Bangkok’s other train lines before. You can buy them from machines with cash, scan a QR code with an app from a Thai bank, or simply tell the ticketing staff which station you’d like to go to and pay them directly. Ticket in hand, beep yourself through the gate, and walk up to the platform. Prices have just recently been set from 15-45 baht, depending on how far you go (which kick in on July 3).

Right off the bat I was surprised to see that the train itself is unmanned, which I was not expecting. If this line runs well, one wonders if the perennially cash-strapped operators will order future updates on other lines to do away with human drivers altogether and let the machines run the whole show. But sadly, despite the lack of a driver’s compartment and thanks to a very deep ‘dashboard’, you are unable to smoosh your face up against the front window, which would have been fun.

The connection between cars has an extremely prominent accordion section that takes up fully half of the width of the carriage, but beyond that, the cars are wide and spacious and – at least on my visit – were not wrapped in ugly exterior advertising, giving you a great view out across the city through the large windows.

The ride itself was not quite smooth as silk, but not too bumpy either – somewhere between the gliding rail wheels of the BTS and the juddering rubber wheels of the Gold Line people mover.

The Bad

Of course, I can’t write this without mentioning the ultra-embarrassing fact that Bangkok still does not have a single-ticket system tying its disparate lines together. Despite being announced at least 8 years ago, the program has run into – surprise – bureaucratic inertia and conflicts over the who, how and how much. We get it, fellas, it’s complicated, but every other city in the world with a rail system has figured it out already – why not us? So, if you want to ride the yellow line, you need a yellow line ticket.

That being said, apparently the yellow line’s owner, MRTA, said riders who transfer to other MRTA-operated lines (pink, orange, purple, blue) can jump to those lines without paying a flag fall charge, while transferring to non-MRTA lines will incur a flag fall charge after 30 minutes. Not sure if that applies only if you’re coming from the yellow line or if you’re coming from and going to the yellow line. Also not sure how it will work, considering many riders won’t have proof of what line they have just come from, so who knows how long this half-measure will be in effect.

I was also saddened – but not surprised – to see that Thailand remains absolutely committed to making connections between stations more difficult than they need to be. As I was exiting from the Lat Phrao MRT station to ride the yellow line, I had to go 3 levels up to the street, along a sidewalk and up an escalator to a long and undulating walkway. A further 2 escalator trips brought me up to ticketing level, for a total (horizontal) distance of about 250m. I saw that others had taken some elevators up to the ticketing level in an attached parking garage, but both solutions felt a bit slapped together and more complicated than they needed to be.

I didn’t manage to notice what type of disabled facilities the stations had, but connecting between lines would, at best, be inconvenient and time-consuming. I’m not an urban planner, but I’d like to believe ‘connection’ means more than just ‘two stations close to each other’.

Later, as the train passed underneath the airport rail link, I got flashbacks to the notoriously awful connection between that line’s Makkasan station and the Asok MRT station back in the day. In today’s case, if one wanted to change from the yellow line’s Hua Mak station to the airport rail link’s Hua Mak station, they’d have to walk about half a kilometer across some rough sidewalks and sketchy pathways to get there. It’s unclear if this will be solved with a walkway, but from what I could see, any improvement was still months away. Thankfully, the connection from the Samrong yellow line station to the Samrong BTS station was only about 150m via an elevated walkway.

The Meh

Finding my bearings (heh) coming up from the MRT, I looked around for some yellow line signage and noticed some printed posters pointing me in the right direction. Useful, but you’d think at some point over the previous few years that the line has been under construction, someone would have thought to get some proper signage made.

While there is lots of room to stand up in the carriages, I did feel that there was a lack of seating space, although I didn’t count seats to compare it to other lines.

I also noticed a huge backlog of riders waiting to get out of the gates at my stop, but I’m quite sure it was just growing pains as staff and facilities get up to speed on a new line.

The Verdict

Objectively speaking, the transit system here is something Bangkokians can be proud of – it’s fast, efficient, clean, safe and cost-effective (although that last point is quite subjective depending on who you talk to and how far they need to go). There are problems, of course, and no transit system is without them, but overall, it’s a huge net positive for the people of Bangkok.

The majority of the yellow line runs down Srinakarin Road, a main artery that, despite the presence of a few major shopping, housing and commercial areas, has remained solidly in “the outskirts” of the city’s geography and is largely a low-rise urban sprawl of shophouses, crisscrossed sois and condos. Thanks to the yellow line, it is unlikely to stay that way much longer.

The Pattaya Monorail is a proposed urban transit system to connect the future Pattaya high-speed railway station with the popular beach area of the city.

The monorail was first proposed in 2008, and since then it’s gone from monorail to tram/light rail, subway, and back to monorail. The routes have varied over this time, and there are also two other proposed lines.

The most recent update is for a monorail (Green Line) beginning at the Pattaya station for the Bangkok-U-Tapao high-speed railway. From there is will travel along North Pattaya Road, 2nd Road, then turning at Thappraya Road to terminate at Bali Hai Pier. The line will be 8.15 km long with 13 elevated stations. The latest estimates have construction beginning in 2023 and be completed in 2026.

[Pattaya HSR Hub]

Other future lines include the Purple line from Thub Phraya intersection to Nong Prue, and the Red line from Dolphin circle (Patthaya Nuea) to Eastern Region National Stadium.

There is also a proposal for a commuter railway (Yellow Line) on the current SRT railway line, which will become redundant once the high-speed line is built. This would run from Sri Racha to U-Tapao, with a transfer junction at Pattaya for the Green Lone monorail and high-speed railway.

If those lines ever get built this page should become “Pattaya Transit System”.

The project is divided into two phases: Phase 1 will extend from the Green Line station S1-01 along Pornpraphanimit Road (Siam Country Club) to Nong Maikan Road. Phase 2 will continue across the railway and Sukhumvit Road, follow Pattaya Central Road, and end at the Thap Phraya intersection.”

The urban rail transit system of Bangkok is going through its biggest expansion since the BTS opened in 1999. Two commuter rail lines opened this year, two monorail lines are scheduled to open next year, and another new MRT line in 2023.

This is an annual summary of lines under construction, news for established lines, and planned lines that are making progress. A full guide to all lines can be found at the Bangkok Mass Rapid Transit System Guide.

Bangkok Transit Maps

There are already some good maps showing what the future Bangkok transit system will look like, so I won’t make a map here. This map covers current and proposed railways that are mentioned in this post.

For station locations, the best map is the future map by BKK Greg.

Current Lines

BTS Sukhumvit Line

There is no news on extensions to report this year, though there are still plans to extend the line in the future. The main news has been about ticket prices. There has been a proposal to charge fares on Green Line extension, on top of what is already an expensive line to ride for the average Thai worker.

The BTS also scrapped the 30-day trip packages, making it more expensive for regular commuters.

In mobility access news, I’ve noticed several stations are in the process of adding lifts to the stations.

[Lift being installed at Phra Khanong.]

Accessibility to stations has been an ongoing battle.
While there were no extensions on the Silom, a gap was filled at the BTS “ghost station” at Saint Louis.

When I visited Saint Louis they were building a convenience store inside the paid ticketed area. Most retail shops are outside the ticketed area.

MRT Purple Line

The Purple Line is set to be extended by 23 kilometres, and in November the MRTA was preparing to invite companies to submit a tender for the extension.

SRT Red Lines

SRT Light Red Line (Taling Chan-Bang Sue) and SRT Dark Red Line (Rangsit-Bang Sue) began trial operations on 2 August 2021, and full service began in November.

Under Construction

There are three new lines under construction, and two of those lines are expected to partially open in 2022. If all goes to plan, my 2022 report will include photos of the new lines.

In anticipation of the opening of the new lines, an updated system map can be seen at MRT stations.

Stickers have been placed over the new lines, waiting for the day to be peeled off. Whoever has the job of peeling the stickers off is going to have the best job of the day, and I hope they upload a video of the unpeeling to oddly satisfying.

This one was already peeling, revealing the Pink Line underneath.

The MRT Orange Line is being built in two stages, with the 22.5km Eastern section from Suwinthawong to Thailand Cultural Centre currently under construction. The Eastern section is 88.46% completed as of the end of November 2021. There is a website dedicated to the Orange Line construction which shows this precise percentage update.

The Eastern section will interchange with the Yellow and Pink monorail lines (both under construction), and with the current Thailand Cultural Centre Station on the MRT Blue Line. Some parts of the Thailand Cultural Centre Station have been boarded up where the interchange will be built.

It might be years before this is built, but that hasn’t discouraged developers from showing their apartment projects next to the future line.

The MRT Yellow Line is an elevated monorail that will travel across the northeastern and eastern areas of Bangkok. The 30.4 km line will have 23 stations and connect with 6 other lines. Test runs began on a completed section in November 2021, and the line is set to open in mid-2022 (as estimated in December 2021).

The MRT Pink Line is an elevated monorail that will provide east-west transport across the north of Bangkok and Nonthaburi Province. A section of the line is expected to open in June 2022.

There is also a dedicated website for the line at https://www.mrta-pinkline.com, but my antivirus software is blocking access to the site. The MRTA also has a Pink Line project page, which is a more typical Thai government website with tiny images and infrequent updates.

Proposed Lines

There are numerous proposed lines in the system, some of which may not be started for years to come. This list covers proposed lines that made the news in the last year.

Grey Line

The Grey Line Monorail has been off and on proposed for years, and in November 2021 it was reported that a feasibility study would be completed by March 2022. Read more about the Grey Line Monorail.

Bang Sue Grand Station

Bang Sue Grand Station is the new central station of Bangkok, which is set to replace Hua Lamphong Station. In addition to serving domestic and international railways, will also be an urban rail hub. The Red Lines depart from here, and there is a stop on the Blue Line MRT. The station will also be a stop on the 3-airport high-speed railway.

The station opened in 2021, not with a bang (sorry) but a whimper. The red lines began operations here, but the long-distance trains haven’t begun services as planned. That is probably a good thing anyway to get the station started gradually rather than trying to get it all operating at the same time.

I visited Bang Sue a few times to have a look around and ride the Red Line railways.

[Bang Sue Commuter Railway platforms.]

The station has been doubling as a mass-vaccination centre, so it is making the most of this massive space before it is fully operational.

I was going to do a review of the station, but I will wait until the services from Hua Lamphonog move here. There are still no shops here either, adding to the feeling that it is not fully open yet. It is strange that in a land with a 7-Eleven on practically every corner that there was no 7-Eleven here (unless I missed the corner where it was hiding). At least this vending machine operator will be happy for a while.

Ticketing

Another year has gone by and there is still no unified ticketing system for Bangkok. The Mangmoom Card is supposed to be the card that can be used on all lines, but it is still delayed.

The Bangkok Post published an editorial on the issue of a universal ticketing system, and I will publish separate article on this issue.

The Da Lat Monorail is a proposed urban rail transit system in the city of Da Lat in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam.

The monorail plan was announced in 2011 and approved by the local government in 2013. At that point, they were hoping for it to be completed by 2020.

The proposal includes six monorail routes with a combined length of 89 kilometres. The monorail will have six-carriage trains, running at speeds of 30-40km per hour.

The network will connect the city centre to major tourist sites, as well as the Da Lat railway station and Lien Khuong Airport.

In addition to the monorail, the government announced plans for three interprovincial railways with a total length of 482km (they will be featured in another article). The cost of the monorail and railways were reported at a combined cost of over VND62 trillion (US$3 billion) in 2011. A separate monorail cost was not reported.

Routes And Map Of Proposed Stations

There is no map showing what the routes would look like. Previous announcements mention destinations and lines with estimated lengths.

Da Lat Monorail Notes

I was going to make a basic route map to show what the monorail system might look like, but after plotting the destinations on the Google Map I can’t see how they would make 6 lines. Da Lat has a population of just over 230,000 people, so a 6-line monorail seems overly ambitious. I wonder if this was meant to mean 6 railways in total (the 3 inter-provincial railways plus 3 monorail lines). 6 monorail lines have been reported on official government websites, so that is what is known so far.

Da Lat is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vietnam, and every year the traffic during major holidays is getting worse. The 2021 Reunification Day holiday saw cars stuck in traffic for 17 hours.

Even in non-holiday periods, the traffic in Da Lat is getting worse. In 2021 it was announced that Da Lat was to get its first traffic light.

Another problem of planning is the hilly terrain and narrow streets of Da Lat. A monorail using one track with passing loops might be the only way to fit an urban railway in Da Lat, and even then it will be a challenge.
