Koh Samui Bridge is a proposed bridge in Thailand from the island of Samui to Khanom district in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province.

Khanom is the nearest point on the mainland, and the proposal has called for a cable-stayed bridge that would span 18km with two lanes in each direction.

The Leyte-Mindanao Bridge is a proposed bridge to connect the islands of Leyte and Mindanao in the Philippines. The project involves the construction of cable-stayed bridges connecting San Ricardo, Southern Leyte and Lipata in Surigao City.

The Leyte-Mindanao Bridge is estimated to be 23 km in length, which is long, but it’s not the longest bridge in Southeast Asia. The future Bataan–Cavite Interlink Bridge will be the longest bridge in the Philippines (32.15 km).

The bridge is one of two missing links in the Pan-Philippine Highway (the Maharlika Highway), with the other proposed bridge being the Luzon-Samar Bridge. The two bridge projects are referred to as the Luzon-Samar-Leyte-Mindanao Linkage Project.

These two bridges would enable road travel from Luzon to Mindanao without ferry travel.

A feasibility study was conducted in 2018, but the project was shelved in 2019 due to the water being too deep in the Surigao Strait.

The project was revived in 2023, with a new proposal to build roads and bridges via the Dinagat Islands. A bridge from Leyte to Dinagat would be about 28 km.

The Mekong River Railway Bridge is a proposed railway bridge between Thailand and Laos. The bridge will have 2 tracks of meter-gauge and 2 tracks of standard-gauge for the Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed railway.

The 4-track railway bridge will be 30 metres away on the downstream side of the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge. The metre-gauge on the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge will be removed when the new bridge is built.

The design of the new bridge is expected to be completed in September 2025, construction is expected to begin in Q3 2026, and the bridge is expected to open in 2029.

Some media outlets are calling the bridge “2nd Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge, Nong Khai-Vientiane”. There is already a 2nd Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge, so this name is needlessly confusing. I have named this page “Mekong River Railway Bridge” until the official name is announced.

The State Railway of Thailand is accelerating the detailed design of the “Mekong River Railway Bridge” with 4 tracks to support trains and high-speed trains. The Daily News Transportation Innovation News Team reported that the construction of the new Mekong River Bridge, which is part of the Nong Khai-Vientiane railway connection project in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), is still under the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) study of the detailed design and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report, with a budget of approximately 119 million baht.

Phase 2 will construct a new car bridge on the north side of the current bridge, adding 2 more traffic lanes to the 2 traffic lanes of the original bridge, making it 4 traffic lanes. (2 lanes per direction) Construction period approximately 30 months, construction starts around 2041, construction is completed and open for service in 2044.

The design of the railway will be an additional design from the high-speed rail project, Phase 2, Nakhon Ratchasima – Nong Khai section, which is designed to cross the Mekong River bridge ending at the bank on the Thai side, kilometer 622 + 004.141 of the 1-meter railway (nearly 1 km north of Nong Khai railway station). The project will design a continuous bridge across the Mekong River. When entering the Lao PDR side, the 1-meter railway will deviate to connect to the original railway. The standard railway will end at the foot of the bridge on the Lao PDR side to connect in the future. However, for the structural form of the new Mekong River bridge, it was initially found that the Balanced Cantilever Bridge is the most appropriate form.

The Ba Son Bridge is a bridge in Ho Chi Minh City that spans the Saigon River, connecting District 1 and Thu Thiem in Thu Duc City. This is the second connection between District 1 and Thu Thiem, joining the Saigon River Tunnel/Thu Thiem Tunnel which opened in November 2011. The bridge was inaugurated on April 28 2022 and in June 2023 it was renamed from Thu Thiem 2 Bridge to Ba Son Bridge.

The bridge was initially named after the new urban area on the Thu Thiem Peninsula in Thu Duc City (formerly known as District 2). The first Thu Thiem Bridge opened in 2008 and connects Binh Thanh District to the Thu Thiem peninsula. The bridge is now named after the Ba Son area along the District 1 riverfront. The bridge is next to the Ba Son metro station.

Ba Son Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with a 113-metre-high tower that arches towards Thu Thiem.

The bridge length is 1,465 metres, with the main span being 885.7 metres. It includes 6 lanes for traffic with pedestrian walkways on both sides.

One end is at Ton Duc Thang in District 1, and the other is at Crescent Boulevard (R1) in Thu Thiem.

Thu Thiem 2 Bridge was built by Dai Quang Minh Corporation as part of a Build-Transfer (BT) contract.

DMQ have been allocated 13.6 ha of land in Thu Thiem New Urban Area in exchange for the construction of major road and bridge projects in the area.

Ho Chi Minh City administration required to return over $1.1bn in state funds: gov’t inspectors – 27/06/19]
The government inspectorate discovered irregularities in the construction of the Thu Thiem 2 Bridge.

Vinacomex, a state-run company, was initially chosen as the developer for the bridge, but the contract was eventually awarded to Dai Quang Minh.

The Ho Chi Minh City administration then permitted Dai Quang Minh to change the design of the bridge to have six lanes instead of four.

The city’s administration did not report the developer and project design changes to the prime minister as required, the state inspectors said.

The approval of about VND252 billion ($10.8 million) in the cost of the construction was also incorrectly made.

The Koh Chang Bridge is a proposed bridge connecting the island of Koh Chang to the mainland in Trat province, Thailand.

The proposal is for a 10-km sea bridge from Laem Ngob sub-district on the mainland to Ban Dan Kao on the island.

Koh Chang is currently served by a car ferry that takes 30 minutes and runs every hour. More services run during peak travel times, but queues that stretch back 2.5 kilometres have been reported during holiday periods.

The Bataan–Cavite Interlink Bridge is a proposed bridge that will connect the provinces of Bataan and Cavite via Manila Bay.

The bridge (also known as the Manila Bay Bridge) will be a four-lane bridge and 32.15 kilometres in length, and it would be the longest bridge in Southeast Asia.

The bridge alignment is from Timalan Balsahan in Naic, Cavite to Alas-Asin in Mariveles, Bataan, via Corregidor Island. Work is expected to begin in late 2023.

The Mekong Delta region of Vietnam is where the Mekong River meets the East Sea. The river splits up into multiple tributaries, giving it the nickname “Nine Dragon River Delta”. While the many rivers made this fertile region “the rice basket of Vietnam”, travelling from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh City used to involve two ferry rides.

The Mỹ Thuận Bridge was the first major bridge to be built in the Mekong Delta, opening in 2000. More bridges have been built since then with more planned and under construction.

This article lists the major bridges in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. It’s not a list of every bridge, otherwise there would be hundreds of bridges if you included footbridges over canals.

The Bali Strait Bridge is a proposed road and railway bridge between Java and Bali in Indonesia.

The earliest proposal goes back to 1960, with the Tri Nusa Bimasakti plan to link the islands of Sumatra, Java and Bali.

The Bali Strait is 2.4 km wide at the narrowest point. By comparison, the longest bridge in Indonesia is the Suramadu Bridge (5.4 km), while the proposed Sunda Strait Bridge linking Sumatra and Java would have been 27 km.

Various government officials have proposed a Java-Bali Bridge over the years, but there has not been any serious consideration for the bridge, especially from the Balinese side.

Longest Elevated Highways In Southeast Asia

Elevated highways are technically bridges, though some sites do not list them in the longest bridges list. The Bang Na Expressway is by far the longest bridge in Southeast Asia, and when it was built it was listed by Guinness World Records as the longest road bridge in the world.

While the Bang Na Expressway is classified as a bridge, I’ve made a separate list for elevated highways. This definition is also open for debate. For example, the Industrial Ring Road Bridge in Bangkok is mostly an elevated highway that includes two distinct bridges. The Industrial Ring Road Bridge includes Bhumibol 1 Bridge (702 m) and Bhumibol 2 Bridge (582 m), leaving over 10 km of elevated highway that is part of the bridge.
